Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 24

I have seen anyone post a list like this, so I figure I’d share mine, felt free to share yours too.

These aren’t in any particular order, and it’s just thrones I happen to like. In some cases it’s a best in class, in some it’s one that strikes me, others are cars I think will be remembered as case that define that decade. Obviously these car cars that came out in this decade.

#1 the Volvo S90/V90 this car was the first with Volvo’s new look and it’s flawless.

Kinja'd!!!

The second is the F30 3 series IMO the best looking BMW to come out of the 10s.

Kinja'd!!!

This one is definitely one that is a “Best in class” crossovers are a huge part of the market and this is the one I like the most. I think I prefer the facelift but I like both.

Kinja'd!!!

One of the most striking cars to come out in the last decade is the LC500 it still looks like a concept car and that’s a good thing.

Kinja'd!!!

One that I’m very sad the US market isn’t getting is the current gen Focus. I liked the last gen focus we got, but it looks like old news compared to this. (The current Fiesta deserves and honorable mention)

Kinja'd!!!

Speaking of things we don’t get the Jimny. I mean just look at it. Perfection. It just looks honest.

Kinja'd!!!

An other good honest design that I really enjoy is the MK7 Golf. In all of it’s iterationsit looks good, sublet, simple, honest. Over complicated design was a big problem in the 10s and the MK7 bucked the trend for a style that will last.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

This one is kind of an odd ball from me, but every time I see one I like it. The ATS Coupe.

Kinja'd!!!

This one is the most recent, and I think the only 201 9 car I put on my list. I  really disliked it when I first saw it. However the more I looked at the whole car, the more I liked how well it all goes together. And I mean, those wheels.

Kinja'd!!!

The last two are my two favorite super cars. I’m not a huge super car fan, but when your taking about the best looking cars there’s bound to be a few on the list. To me the 918 is gorgeous, and those top mounted exhausts are too cool.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Last is the Ford GT. This ne doesn’t need an explanation.

So many cars can be on this list, I’d add the RF ND.

This one is the most recent, and I think the only 2029 car I put on my list.

I see we have a time traveler in our midst

Also, holy formatting batman! Thanks kinja! And there appear to be 12 different cars in pictures but only 10 actually described.

That is one I don’t think of. I’d switch the GT our for it.

I thought about making a list of like the top 40 and doing a bracket, but then I realized I don’t get paid for this and I’m lazy

Mm that green one!

This is an older lady, prolly 60 something that owns a pet grooming place in my town. She daily drives her ATS4 coupe and I admire her. In a world where so many choose big ass SUVs just because “I need four wheel drive” she chose to have some style.

Also I are do not proof read. I was too nervous about whether or not this would actually post after I spent 20 minutes on it

As an F30 owner... I think the F36 looks better than the F30.

I think it looks, and probably is, too large.

The 3 series should be lean, the f32/6 is too pudgy

Going to have to strongly disagree on the Lincoln, the LC500, and the Genesis.

The rest are all pretty sharp. I really like the V90 and the 918.

If this came out before 2010, it is in a close second to the ATS as the best l ooking large coupe. Perfect proportions, but probably much better visibility than the ATS.

I love the Genesis personally, I think as a whole it’s a gorgeous car.

The V90 on the other hand looks like a Buick to me.

Before going into analyzing each of those, and finding examples in those segments of better design...

If that is the best that the last decade had to offer, then it was a worse decade than I thought.

OK, now with the analysis. Starting with the good.

The Volvos look good. The Ford GT is innovative, and the 918 Spyder is functionally beautiful.

The Lexus LC500 is the best looking Lexus ever, even despite the odd transitions on the roof lines. Not perfect, but what it does get right, is fantastic.

Now the bad and the ugly. Remember, this is ALL STYLING.

Those BMWs? REALLY? Not the 6, 8, or i8?

How is Lincoln even on this list? Golf shouldn’t be either. May be good cars mechanically, but they are visually bland as soggy toast.

Ford should not be rewarded for making an hunchback econobox with a fish face, either. S550 Mustang, before and after the facelift are much more eligible for style consideration than any of Ford’s econoboxes.

Jimny... an even tinier re-hash of a boxy off-roader than Renegade, which is a re-hash of Wrangler... I have seen crates with more style than that. Again, this is about FORM, not function, and if there is no form other than function, that isn’t style.

ATS is bland compared to CTS or ELR, regardless of the merit of the functionality underneath. ATS could have been really compelling, but ATS is too bland and rational, and Camaro isn’t rational enough.

Genesis’ grille is atrociously out of proportion for a car that is supposed to be high-style, but somewhat conservative luxury. Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Mercedes/Maybach would never do that, and they have released better looking cars in the last 10 years than this.

No McLarens... like say 720S Spyder.

No Ferraris... I am sure there is at least one released before the 2020 model year that is truly good looking... before SP90 and Roma really got their design department back on track. F12, GT4C-Lusso, and Portofino even look pretty good.

No Lamborghini Huracan, arguably the most cohesive and sleek expression of Lamborghini design language since the Diablo, that isn’t just A Vent & A Door.

No Aston Martin Virage and Vanquish... quite possibly the pinnacle of front-engined GT design that I think Aston Martin is somewhat declining from with DB11 and newer designs.

Jaguar F-type. Most other Jags tend to look decent, too, as well as Land Rovers. Range Rover Velar is quite slick for a CUV/SUV... better looking than any Lincoln.

Koeniggssegg Regera. Lotus Evora GT430.

Bugatti Chiron. It may be a ridiculous premise, but the design is much better than the Veyron it replaces.

Porsche 981 Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder.... or the GT3-based Speedster. Heck even the Panamera Sport Tourismo wagon.

BAC Mono... gorgeously bonkers.

Arguably the new ND MX5 Miata could possibly have a spot on the list, not just ultra-exotics.

I am sure there are more, these are just off the top of my head.

I’ll make a longer response to this later but my first though is. The i8 could be on the ugliest list. With things the Eclipse Cross and the Buick Verano.

Agree, the RF looks really cool, I stop and gawk when I see one.  However, I don't like the ND Miata convertible, just too tall and stubby.

I don’t think that is a bad list, but I do have to say, as someone else mentioned, it was a pretty bleak decade if that is the best it has to offer. I would cast what is probably a popular vote for the Mazda 6, it isn’t so stunning now because so many tried to copy it.

A slightly less popular vote for the Fiat 124 Spider, that looks oh so much better than its Mazda sibling.

And an exceedingly less popular vote for the new Civic, which I think looks very modern and aggressive without being over the top.

Sorry, but the 3 series has been bloated and ugly since the E46.

I think we are going through a very ugly era for car styling, about the only time I can think of that is comparable is early 70s American cars. Current era cars just look slab sided and or bloated, turret topped, heavy and not very attractive to me.

A lot of you opinions  seem to be  based on the belief that simple design is bad, or boring design. I can not support that belief.

Simple isn’t it. I can’t abide lazy design.

W hether that is bland and boring, or ridiculously ramshackle and insanely over-styled.

‘ let’s just put a line HERE! Oh, wait, we need at least 4 more lines now.’

‘ Let’s just make this headlight, or tail light, or window graphic have 18 different varying soft angle changes, and protrude 6 inches out from the body surface... because no reason. It will look different, and all different is more better.’

The BMW’s headlights on the model you chose, that cut to the grille chrome for no reason... BMW has a great history of handsome design, but for a while now, it has been a damn mess... and if you thing i8's concept car looks are among the worst, rather than among the best... I am not sure what to tell you . i3 is among the worst.

‘ Let’s make something look like the box it came in... because... well, I don’t know what else to do.’ Whether that is Renegade, Lada Niva, Jimny, or Nissan Cube. Various examples from boring to insane, but I don’t find compelling. There is utilitarian reason for Some of that, like Jimny or Wrangler... but utilitarian design is good function, without needing to be good style... and I don’t count it as good style, even if it is good function.

Actually, simple, clean design, like Volvo/Polestar 1, Pininfarina Cambiano, Ferrari Roma, Aston Martin Vanquish, and various other examples of truly good combinations of correct proportion, and clean, flowing, and appealing surface development, are not easy to come up with.

Lamborghini Huracan is arguably simpler design within the Lamborghini brutalist design language than any other recent Lamborghini... and it is the best, simplest, cleanest, and sleekest looking.

Sometime it is just a bit more logic in the design.. Lexus LC500 has logic in how details, lines, and surfaces intersect and flow from each other... except perhaps the top of the A-pillars, and the floating disjointed C-pillars... but mostly good flow. LF-A was a similar form, but the lines and surfaces made much less sense. (although I wish LC had LF-A’s roofline)

Why does Genesis’ grille need to be SO big? or BMW’s new grilles also? they are disproportionate.

Why do the MKX and MKC need to look like boring loafs of bread with a few creased lines and the indecisive changing corporate grilles? Everyone is going GAGA over the new Navigator and Aviator, and maybe they are big jumps in quality, and are amazingly better vehicles than their predecessors ... but they look like clones of Suburban and Escalade... and generally BORING. Not that it matters much in that segment. However, Telluride at least brings an interesting look... of Strong Like BULL!

Details need a reason, even if that reason is to draw the eye.

Surfaces need a proportion, not just slapped on.

Lines need a direction and to flow naturally.

Proportions have appeal when they are good, and are disturbing when they are bad.

There are bad designs that are stylistically unsettling and unappealing.

There are utilitarian designs that don’t need to be particularly good style .

Then there are examples of good design that are aesthetically beautiful to look at.
